When you pay the 2027 marchamo on the INS website, the total already includes an optional insurance called "Más protección" for ₡11,900. It isn't required: the marchamo is valid without it, and you can remove it before paying.

What does "Más protección" cover?

According to the INS, it adds up to ₡6 million per person for medical expenses, travel costs and temporary disability from traffic accidents, on top of the mandatory insurance.

How do you remove "Más protección" from the 2027 marchamo?

  1. Look up your marchamo on the INS website and go to "Pagar marchamo".
  2. In the list of extra coverages, the first one is "Más protección", marked "Agregado" (added).
  3. Click that label and confirm with "Continuar".
  4. Check that the total dropped by ₡11,900 before you pay.

Is it worth keeping?

It depends on the driver. If you already have health insurance or a broad policy on your car, you probably don't need it. If you have no other coverage, it may be worth it.
