An estimate with the official rates in force. The notary confirms the exact amount when drawing up the deed, and some charge more than the minimum fee.

Before you pay for the transfer

Check that the car has no liens or unpaid marchamo, and run the VIN to see if it has a history in the United States.

Who pays?

The law doesn't say: buyer and seller agree. Most often the buyer pays.

Frequently asked questions

What amount is the transfer calculated on?

The higher of the price in the deed and the fiscal value Hacienda assigns to the car. Writing a lower price in the deed doesn't lower the tax.

How much is the transfer tax?

2.5% of the transfer value. It's paid to Hacienda, and the Registro won't record the transfer until it is; paid late, it adds interest and a fine.

How much does the notary charge for a transfer?

Under the fee schedule, 2% up to ₡10 million, 1.5% on the excess up to ₡15 million, 1.25% up to ₡30 million and 1% on the rest, at least ₡60,500, plus 13% VAT.

Is the timbre fiscal still charged?

No. Ley 10586 repealed the timbre fiscal on acts and contracts in December 2024.

Where do I find my car's fiscal value?

On the marchamo receipt, in the Registro Nacional plate lookup or on Hacienda's portal.

Rates: Registro Nacional (movable property fees), Decreto 41457-JP (lawyers' and notaries' fee schedule) and Ley 10586. Checked in November 2026.
